Dan Ports is a Ph.D. candidate at MIT, where his research is about developing abstractions to make building complex distributed systems easier.

His current work focuses on building high-performance storage with transaction support. One element of this work is the implementation of Serializable Snapshot Isolation in Postgres 9.1, with Kevin Grittner. Another, more research-oriented product is TxCache, an application-level cache (in the style of memcached) that integrates with a modified version of Postgres to ensure that applications see a transactionally consistent (serializable) view of the system, regardless of whether they access data from the cache or the database.

Dan's past work has included efficiently managing the membership of global-scale distributed and peer-to-peer systems, and guaranteeing application security even in the face of a compromised operating system.
