I share your fear but have done this within the last year. It went without
a hitch.
I'd suggest following the instructions in the installations README file and
then if it doesn't work come back with the error message or problem.

Hi;
Back in the days when running my Linux server scared the living daylights
out of me I tried to upgrade my Python installation and disaster struck.
Now I need to do it again. How do I do it? Just move the current
installation to a temp dir and do the make make install dance?
