FAQ
All,

Also I've just installed Mailman (2.1b1) an imported all my members. But
when I do a general
'listinfo' via the web python goes crazy and consumes almost
100% of my dual processor system. The page also loads VERY SLOW.

Here's the info from TOP:

4:12pm up 1 day, 18:08, 1 user, load average: 1.00, 0.74, 0.66
235 processes: 225 sleeping, 6 running, 4 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 41.9% user, 27.8% system, 8.3% nice, 21.8% idle
Mem: 2061788K av, 1752960K used, 308828K free, 0K shrd, 20144K
buff
Swap: 417680K av, 0K used, 417680K free 1304284K
cached

PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
11681 nobody 15 0 86908 84M 1080 R 0 97.0 4.2 0:15 python

We are running Mailman 2.1b2 and Python 2.1.3 on Redhat 6.2 w/ kernel 2.4.17
(SMP)

Our lists are pretty big - 290K total but the individual list pages (for the
smaller lists:
http://mailman.kleinman.com/listinfo/rce ) load very quickly

We have yet to do a test mailing to our lists and wanted to make sure
everything is set, optimized and working before we see if Mailman/Qmail can
send to a 80K list.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Has this been figured out yet?

BTW, Geoffrey what'd the exact Mailman version that you're running?
    (you mention both 2.1b1 and 2.1b2) ?

What is this Mailman process doing? (Have you tried strace?)

I think Geoffrey just has huge lists, and since the general listinfo
overview has to load every list into memory, you're kind of screwed.
An external user database (possible in MM2.1 with some Python hacking)
    would help a lot here.

For the cgi's you're probably okay, since they're one shots. The
general listinfo will be slow, but individual list's listinfos will be
    faster.

Where you could have a problem is in mail delivery, bounce processing,
etc., since it's doubtful Mailman will return that memory to the
system. Right now I think the best approach is to periodically (via
cron) issue a "bin/mailmanctl restart" to kill the qrunner
    sub-processes and restart them.
