FAQ
Hello,

I just installed mailman-1.1.

and I got this errror:

****
Mailman CGI error!!!

The expected gid of the Mailman CGI wrapper did not match the gid as set by the Web server.

The most likely cause is that Mailman was configured and installed incorrectly. Please read the INSTALL instructions again, paying close attention to the --with-cgi-gid configure option. This
entry is being stored in your syslog:

?x??x??
***

/* look at the last 'garbage' line */

Syslog says:
============
Feb 3 19:45:23 palm-utp.sonytel.be Mailman cgi-wrapper (listinfo): o^?u`oz^X,oz18

/* again garbage output */

No error log in /home/mailman/log.

I did read:
==========
"-with-cgi-gid=<group-or-groups>
Specify an alternative group for running scripts via the
CGI wrapper. <group-or-groups> can be a list of one or
more integer group ids or symbolic group names. The first
value in the list that resolves to an existing group is
used. By default, the value is the the list `www www-data
nobody'.
"

Configured with:
================
Solaris 2.5.1 and gcc

./configure --prefix=/home/mailman --with-python=/usr/local.host/bin/python --with-mail-gid=daemon --with-cgi-gid=nobody

Apache 1.3.6 runs with:
======================
ps -edalf -o group,comm | grep httpd
other /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
nobody /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
nobody /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
nobody /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
nobody /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
nobody /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd

Any idea what's going wrong??
The garbage output bothers me in the WEB output,
When I cahnge apache to run with another GUID,

ps -edalf -o group,comm | grep httpd
other /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
daemon /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
daemon /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
daemon /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
daemon /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd
daemon /wwwi/server/apache-1.3.6/bin/httpd

I get:
=====
****
The expected gid of the Mailman CGI wrapper did not match the gid as set by the Web server.

The most likely cause is that Mailman was configured and installed incorrectly. Please read the INSTALL instructions again, paying close attention to the --with-cgi-gid configure option. This
entry is being stored in your syslog:

Failure to exec script. WANTED gid -268436952, GOT gid 0. (Reconfigure to take 0?)
****

Which is clearly a different message.

However in syslog:
=================
Feb 3 20:10:37 palm-utp.sonytel.be Mailman cgi-wrapper (listinfo): o^?uHoz^X,oz18
Same blabla..

Anybody?

Best Regards
