FAQ
Hi there. I'll be releasing perl 5.13.10 on February 20th. We need a
perldelta for that release which is currently very incomplete.

To that end I've gone through all the commits from v5.13.9..99ca48e
(current blead) and written notes about what I think at a glance needs
a perldelta or not, and what needs to be clarified for me so that I
can write the delta.

Those notes are below. It would be very useful if the people involved
and others could:

* Go over the notes for their commits and see if they make sense
* Clarify things, or even write a short paragraph that I can include
in the delta
* Commit a delta entry for commits they've made. This is of course
optional, but very appreciated.

I've CC'd the people who I need information from. Hopefully I haven't
missed any.

Here are the commits and my notes:

81fe74f Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Define PerlIOBase_open

New PerlIO API. Shouldn't this also be documented in perlapi? The docs
in perliol.pod just say you can use it, but nothing says what its
prototype etc. are

c0888ac Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Use PerlIOBase_open
for pop, utf8 and bytes layers

Does this change existing behavior?

ecfd064 Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Fixes 'raw' layer
for perl#80764

Fixes http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Ticket/Display.html?id=80764, that should
be noted.

a4b0381 Michael Stevens <mstevens@etla.org> -- Porting pod lint.

No delta needed.

1b279fc Michael Stevens <mstevens@etla.org> -- Fix pod bug - bare =item

No delta needed.

ff7e900 Michael Stevens <mstevens@etla.org> -- Update old
activestate links to point to git.

Thanks Michael, I note that:

Perhaps you or someone is interested in fixing that with the relevant
modules (very low priority).

No delta needed.

dc7c536 Michael Stevens <mstevens@etla.org> -- Fixed patch for 5.10.0 link.

No delta needed.

2cd5623 Karl Williamson <public@khwilliamson.com> -- mktables:
Clarify comment

No delta needed.

f952827 Karl Williamson <public@khwilliamson.com> -- regcomp.c:
Refactor macro so works on EBCDIC, clarity

Does this change the status of our EBCDIC support or is it just a
small refactor that doesn't need mentioning?

I.e. will we still fail horribly on EBCDIC systems, just not here?

2926a53 Chris 'BinGOs' Williams <chris@bingosnet.co.uk> -- Update
Changes in Module::CoreList for the 2.42_01 release

No delta needed?

filename used in the regexp to avoid \ issues on Win32

No delta needed.

3bef022 Tony Cook <tony@develop-help.com> -- depend on files
needed for porting/buildtoc.t

No delta needed? Or did this un-break the win32 build?

3842ad6 Nicholas Clark <nick@ccl4.org> -- Convert
lib/Pod/t/utils.t from Test to Test::More
8c2a530 Nicholas Clark <nick@ccl4.org> -- Convert

Maybe write something like "some tests have been converted from Test
to Test::More" ?

whitespace in Pod which can confuse pod/buildtoc

whitespace in Pod which can confuse pod/buildtoc

All these buildtoc fixes can probably go under some generic "lots of
fixes to buildtoc" heading, no?

3879ea51d63e30f393172fcd711bc89f88997019

path2modname() into its only caller.

I might modify the relevant script to do that, of course that'll be
hard since we'd have to maintain a .mailmap to do it properly.

    Do we note these upgrades?
    Yes, upgrades that involve version bumps are generally noted in
    perldelta. Some of those notes also include a short version of the
    changes since the last version bundled in blead.
    cbf59d5 Florian Ragwitz <rafl@debian.org> -- Stop EU::CBuilder's

    However, I think this particular change is way too minor to be listed in
    perldelta. Just list the bumped version in the section for upgraded core
    modules.

    81fe74f Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Define PerlIOBase_open

    New PerlIO API. Shouldn't this also be documented in perlapi? The docs
    in perliol.pod just say you can use it, but nothing says what its
    prototype etc. are
    It's an implementation of the Open method, so the prototype is known.
    PerlIO in general is pretty much entirely absent from perlapi, and I
    think that's far more urgent to document end-user functions (e.g.
    PerlIO_open, PerlIO_read, etc…) than vtable function implementations.
    In fact I think it would be outright confusing to document it without
    documenting the main interface. That's a fairly big project that's
    somewhere on my todo list but unlikely to be done before 5.14.
    c0888ac Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Use PerlIOBase_open
    for pop, utf8 and bytes layers

    Does this change existing behavior?
    Yes, but only in cases where it previously didn't work. How about this
    perldelta entry:

    «Three of Perl's builtin PerlIO layers (C<:pop>, C<:utf8> and
    C<:bytes>) didn't allow stacking when opening a file. For example
    this:

    open FH, '>:pop:perlio', 'some.file' or die $!;

    Would throw an error: "Invalid argument". This has been fixed in this release»
    ecfd064 Leon Timmermans <fawaka@gmail.com> -- Fixes 'raw' layer
    for perl#80764
    This fix exposes more of #38456, my fix for that probably should be
    applied along with it (AFAIK it hasn't), or else there's a previously
    mentioned regression on windows.

    think that's far more urgent to document end-user functions (e.g.
    PerlIO_open, PerlIO_read, etc…) than vtable function implementations.
    In fact I think it would be outright confusing to document it without
    documenting the main interface. That's a fairly big project that's
    somewhere on my todo list but unlikely to be done before 5.14.
    Aren't they all documented in perlapio.pod? Or did you mean something
    more exhaustive?

    And maybe perlapi.pod should get a link to perlapio.pod?

    Cheers,

    Good you mention that, I completely forgot about its existence. IMO it
    should be merged with perlapi, but a link would already be a major
    improvement. It hasn't been updated since 2003, so it's out of date in
    a number of regards. Fortunately updating it is a lot less work than
    writing it from scratch.

    Note that we don't have PerlIORaw_open anymore?
    It certainly looks like an API change to me, but I don't know the
    rationale for it; I was just fixing a build broken by

    http://perl5.git.perl.org/perl.git/commit/ecfd064

    613e98e Craig A. Berry <craigberry@mac.com> -- Split shebang line
    fix-up from file processing in MM->fixin().
    5844a3e Craig A. Berry <craigberry@mac.com> -- Override
    _fixin_replace_shebang on VMS so MM->fixin works.

    Doesn't $VERSION need to be bumped for this? hat's the state of our
    EU::MM now?
    Yes, or, since the commits are already in upstream, persuade Schwern
    to cut a dev release of MM and then integrate it.

    79c8612 David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- XS-APItest/t/caller.t:
    mark two passing tests

    "Test hints hash under debugger" or something, or maybe nothing.
    The fix to the tests is too trivial to note.
    c43ae56 David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- add GvCV_set() and
    GvGP_set() macros.

    New API. Should be noted. Agreed.
    6e4c470 David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- RT #75870 perldata.pod
    tied hash in scalar context

    Note that http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Ticket/Display.html?id=75870 was fixed.
    It was a fairly minor doc fix, and probably doesn't need noting
    f6d9469 David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- fix harmless invalid
    read in Perl_re_compile()

    Fixes [perl #2460]. Will note.
    An obscure bug fix that is unlikely to affect user-level code - probably
    doesn't need noting
    daaf7ac David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- make reg_eval_scope.t
    TODOs consistently fail

    Will note this.
    Just a fix to a test: probably doesn't need noting
    99ca48e David Mitchell <davem@iabyn.com> -- add tests for #3516:
    \G in a m//g

    Will note this.
    Just some tests added for a now-old fix. Not worth noting.

    No delta needed. Right.

    No delta needed? Or did this un-break the win32 build?
    It unbroke the Win32 build.

    perldeltad in 347ee86f.
