FAQ
Ok, so it is a stoney idea

$def{'fd'} = new FileHandle unless defined $def{'fd'};

dtk_connect_to($def{host}, $def{port}, $def{'fd'});

what I wanted to be able to do was

$def{'fd'}->print($dermessage);

while(<$def{'fd'}>) {
# grovel the response
}

note that all of this works in the form

my $fd = $def{'fd'};

$fd->print($dermessage);

while(<$fd>) {
# grovel the response
}

so which part am I missing here in the deref game...

I have tried so far

${def{'fd'}}->print...

I also know that

print { def{'fd'} } "$dermessage";

will dereference the FileHandle Glob....
