In the application I'm working on, I'm opening a new index every 15-20
minutes. This is done by opening the new index and then closing the old

700MB of memory based on some simple testing. I am passing -Xmx3072m to
I've run into some OutOfMemoryErrors, and looking at the heap dump that
was generated, I see three ReadOnlyMultiSegmentReaders, each one
referencing roughly 700MB of heap:
- One is referenced as the currently in-use index.
- One is being opened and a simple query is running to force the terms
to be cached in RAM.
- One is only referenced by the Finalizer thread.
I definitely have an issue where GC isn't keeping up, but I'm a bit
concerned that a class (DirectoryIndexReader) that has a finalize()
method is referencing so much memory and delaying GC of that memory
until the finalizer can get around to it. Has anyone else run into an
issue like this?
It seems like SegmentReader.doClose() could null out its TermInfosReader
to make the large amount of cached terms available for GC much sooner
and not reliant on the finalizer.
