FAQ
Folks

For a Test Database the Controlfile needs to be CREATED from an existing "backup control file to Trace SQL Script" but a few Datafiles are MISSING.

How is the Controlfile to be created in such a case?

I am assuming the following Steps:-

1)Missing datafile names should NOT be Removed from the Controlfile Trace SQL Script
2)Control file should be created.
3)Thereafter Missing datafiles should be Dropped.

Cheers & Thanks

Vivek

Why an existing backup contolfile to trace? Why are the datafiles
'missing'? Is this from a production db that is functioning correctly?
(I assume the answer is no)

Maybe this is an archived db that you're restoring from tape or
something to get some old data out of?

Why an existing backup contolfile to trace?

=> Control file needs to be RE-Created as the Cold Backup of Database is currently extracted in a Different Directory Set from Tape versus the Directory Set from which the Database cold backup was originally taken.

    Why are the datafiles 'missing'?

=> Extraction from Tape failed in-between with the following Error Message & thus a few datafiles are missing.
    Error Message:-
    /usr/local/bin/tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
/usr/local/bin/tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Is this from a production db that is functioning correctly? (I assume the answer is no)

    => NO

Maybe this is an archived db that you're restoring from tape or something to get some old data out of?

    => YES

    Hi Vivek,

Datafiles are marked MISSING when they are offline/read-only. Do you have datafiles in offline/read-only state in your production database?

You can identify which MISSING file is associated with which actual data file. MISSINGnnnn is the normal file naming convention, where "nnnn" is the file number in decimal.

After creating the controlfile, you may rename all MISSING files with their respective datafile's instead of dropping them.

    Regards

    Vivek,

The datafile rename commands Asif is talking about can be found further down
in the tracefile containing the "create controlfile" statement. Obviously
you need to copy these datafiles from your production system to the test
    system first.

    Thanks Folks for responding.

    To clarify:-

Qs 1 - Should the "backup control file to Trace SQL Script" be Edited & the Missing Datafile NAMES be Removed to enable re-creation of the Controlfile?
Qs 2 - If the Above Missing Datafile Names are NOT Removed from the "backup control file to Trace SQL Script", will the Control file Creation Fail?

NOTE - The Missing Datafiles had got missed out in the previous Cold Back up to Tape by oversight & are thus Lost forever.
NOTE - The respective "backup control file to Trace SQL Script" is also extracted from the Tape along with the Cold Backup.
NOTE - After taking of Previous Cold Backup to Tape, the Database had been removed from the Machine.
