What are the Entries in Tnsnames.ora say -did they point your service name
to IPX otherwise make your service name use IPX instead of TCP.
I hope this helps.

Subject: Oracle on NT over IPX

Hi,

I have an enviroment with one Oracle Server version 8.1.6 on a NT
Server (version 4.0 and SP 6a) using the protocol IPX, I configured the
listener locally to connect via IPX and it worked fine, so I tried to
connect to the Oracle via ODBC on other NT machine over the protocol
IPX, but the machine does not connect to the database (I could map a
directory from the NT machine, so the protocol is working fine). I tried
to use the command tsnping but it doesn´t work, it stay "Attemptin to
connect...", with no answer. I instaled SAP Agent and the Gateway
Services for Netware, but nothing changed, Does anybody have experience
with this installation and configuration just using IPX and NT (I don´t
have any Novell server on my enviroment) ?

Hi Steve,

Well, I guess then I was then totally wrong in thinking that the
"e-mails" that ensued after our initial discussion on the list
in 1998, did clarify it. I remember your e-mails, asking me
about the "source" of my information (because you "thought" I
was wrong) about the master and process freelists, and the
overhead the access pattern it posed. I did divulge the source
and had further discussions about it.

My thinking was that, once we had established the "source" of
the information and it's credibility, we had agreed on the
"facts of disagreement". But, obviously we have not.

I think it is OK for us to disagree on this and anything else,
as we are two individuals with varying backgrounds and
experiences. I have my "production experience", you have your
"lab tests", and I can definitely "agree to differ"...;-)

Well, you don't meention what platform it is.

If on NT, I believe it can be done, but I've been told
    you must install 8.1.6 first.

On Unix and variants, no problem. We have 8.1.5, 7.3.3.5, 7.3.4, 8.1.6
and probably a couple I missed.

But since you asked, I'm guessing you're on NT.

    Hi Christine,

I haven't had experience with 734 on NT but I thought the following forum
posting by an Oracle representative on Metalink might help.

My reading of it suggests that to install 734 and 816 on NT you need to
install 734 first and then 816 (otherwise 734 may muck up 816's registry
    settings).

For ease of future support I would suggest installing them into separate
    homes.

Subject: Re : Multiple Oracle installations

    Hello,

I am not sure which platform you are on and which version of 8 you have
anyway when installing a multiple home compliant version (Oracle8 8.0.4 and
higher are multiple home compliant) with a non-multiple home compliant
version (like V7), the non-compliant version must be installed first in the
    default home.

Asssuning you have WIN NT (if not let su know) you can run multiple versions
of Oracle on the same NT server. The limitations would apply to versions
prior to 8.0.4 when multiple homes were not supported on NT.

For example, you cannot install versions 7.3.3 and 7.3.4 on the same NT
server since these versions had to be installed in the same Oracle Home. The
executables/binaries include the version number in
    the name (ORACLE73.EXE).

However, you can install Oracle8 8.0.5 and Oracle7 7.3.4 in the same Oracle
Home on the same NT server or in separate Oracle Homes on the same NT
server. In this case Oracle7 7.3.4 would have to be
installed first (no multiple home support) and then Oracle8 8.0.5 could be
installed into a separate Oracle Home.

If you want to install Oracle8 8.0.4 and Oracle8 8.0.5 on the same NT
server, you can accomplish this by using separate Oracle Homes. Because
these are the same major version (8.0) they cannot be
installed in the same Oracle Home.

I think the documentation you are looking for can be found in your NT
Getting Started Guide for 8.0.5. Chapter 6 discusses multiple home use and
does talk about these installation scenarios.

    Thanks!

This goes without saying, but keep close notes on every change you make =
    to
that system, in case you have to backtrack.

Especially if you plan to migrate the Oracle7 database to 8i.

Also do a full export of your database(s) in conventional mode before =
    you do
    anything else.

For the copy of 8i I have here (8.1.5.0.0), the migration utility did =
    not
work properly and every time we had to re-create the Oracle7 database
    entirely.

In the end we ended up importing the Oracle7 database into 8i, we =
    bypassed
    the migration utility altogether.

This was just on a test machine, thank goodness.
