FAQ
Hi.
I am trying to install CDH4 free and the installation fails at the database
setup stage, with error: "No database server found running on host
manager.lan:7432".

It seems to me CDH4 expects postgresql on 7432 but the only mention in
/etc/hosts is 5432:
# grep "postgre" /etc/services
postgres 5432/tcp postgresql # POSTGRES
postgres 5432/udp postgresql # POSTGRES
But what do I know!! (I tried setting
/etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.mgmt.properties to 5432 but that meant I could
no longer browse to localhost:7180 so i changed it back.)
i do not know how to check if there is a postgresql server on 7432 or, if
not, how to deal with this.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

I removed the install files, started again. this time it failed saying no
Postgresql running. I manually started that and this time it installed!
The only difference I noticed was this time manager.lan:7432 had become
    manager.7432.

Glad you got that working. Not sure why the earlier call to get FQDN
returns "manager.lan". Your hosts' forward and reverse resolution just have
    to be consistent.
