FAQ
Hello,

I tried building a cluster with 4 nodes using cloudera manager 4.7.1.
Cluster installation went fine. I got installation complete for all the
nodes.

But when I clicked on inspect role, I just got one host - localhost. Is
that normal?

Later on towards the end I got this error message.
A server error has occurred. Send the following information to Cloudera.

    Hi

    The error means that you are for example trying to create a CDH4
    cluster but CM detects that CDH3 is installed on the hosts, but it may
    be misleading because a couple of things look wrong:
    1. host inspector should detect all 4 hosts. So the agent on 3 hosts
    are not able to talk to CM server, most likely caused by...
    2. that host should not report "localhost.localdomain" as its
    hostname. That means your hosts probably aren't configured property to
    report FQDN as hostname. Fix that first and you can verify with a
    command like $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"

    After you fix that, click on the individual hosts page to make sure that
    they are healthy and the reported "CDH Version" is as expected. You
    can also manually run the Host Inspector from the Hosts page to make
    sure all hosts are healthy and report a consistent CDH version. Then
    you
    can "Add Cluster" again. Since you said the hosts were already
    installed successfully, this time use the "Existing Hosts" tab to
    avoid going through installation again.

    Hello Herman,

    Thanks for replying.

    That is true. I have been thinking that there is gonna be version problems
    because every time I try making a cluster, it says mixed CDH version. but I
    ran hadoop version in all the nodes and i got Hadoop 2.0.0-cdh4.4.0 for all
    of them. So this means CDH4 is installed on the hosts right.

    Also, cat /etc/hosts says
    10.100.104.16 cloudera1.qfab.org cloudera1
    10.100.104.17 cloudera2.qfab.org cloudera2
    10.100.104.18 cloudera3.qfab.org cloudera3
    10.100.104.19 cloudera4.qfab.org cloudera4
    10.100.104.20 cloudera5.qfab.org cloudera5

    And when i search for hosts I get FQDN as

    In my host inspect there are a couple of errors every time I add a cluster.

    error1: I dont understand one thing, I tried adding cloudera 4 and it was
    successful but in the host inspector it refers to cloudera5.
    error2: Init scripts are httpd right? I checked on my host httpd is
    stopped; still I am getting the error.
    error3: I will get this disabled from my network admin.
    error4: This is the mixed version I was talking about.

    Thanks

    Hello Herman,

    Thanks for getting back to me.

    Thats true I got an error in host inspector that there is a mixed version
    of CDH. but when i run hadoop version I get Hadoop 2.0.0-cdh4.4.0 for all
    the nodes. Or is this something else?

    /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    10.100.104.16 cloudera1.qfab.org cloudera1
    10.100.104.17 cloudera2.qfab.org cloudera2
    10.100.104.18 cloudera3.qfab.org cloudera3
    10.100.104.19 cloudera4.qfab.org cloudera4
    10.100.104.20 cloudera5.qfab.org cloudera5

    And when I search the hosts to add to the cluster I get hostname/FQDN as
    cloudera1/2/3/4/5.qfab.org. Is this what you were talking about?

    On running the host inspector

    Error1: Sometimes I get the error as

    The following failures were observed in checking hostnames...

         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have IP 10.100.104.19 but resolved
    itself to 10.100.104.20.
         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have name cloudera4.qfab.org but
    resolved (InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName()) itself to
         cloudera5.qfab.org.
         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have canonical name
    cloudera4.qfab.org but resolved
         (InetAddress.getLocalHost().getCanonicalHostName()) itself to
    cloudera5.qfab.org.

    But I get this only after re-running the host inspector. What does this
    mean?

    Error2: The following errors were found while looking for conflicting init
    scripts. Use 'chkconfig' to disable init scripts to avoid conflicts with
    daemons managed by Cloudera Manager.

         The init script for hbase-solr-indexer is enabled on at least one of
    runlevel 2-5 on host cloudera4.qfab.org.

    Is this the same as httpd? Because on Googling disable init script, I found
    disabling httpd and that is already stopped. Still I am getting this error.

    Error3: Transparent Hug Pages is enabled. i will egt this disabled by my
    network admin. Hopefully I wont see this again.

    Error4: 1 hosts are reporting with MIXED CDH version
    This is the error I was talking about. But all hosts has cdh4.4.0

    Thanks.

Fix that first and you can verify with a
    command like $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"

    Update: Except for the mixed CDH error on host inspector all other errors
    have been been resolved.

    I think my only question now will be:

    Is it possible to update or make the CDH version same on all the nodes
    without actually uninstalling it?

    To contradict what Todd said, Lily HBase Indexer is shipped and supported
    by Cloudera. The version reporting is harmless, and addressed in a later
    Search release.

    You can fix the initscript warning, from an earlier post, by either:

        - Uninstalling the hbase-solr-indexer package. That's just the
        initscripts, which CM does not use.
        - Or you can run `chkconfig --level 2345 hbase-solr-indexer off'.

    Yes, Transparent hugepage and init error are fixed. Currently I am getting

    Error1: Sometimes I get the error as

    The following failures were observed in checking hostnames...

         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have IP 10.100.104.19 but resolved
    itself to 10.100.104.20.
         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have name cloudera4.qfab.org but
    resolved (InetAddress.getLocalHost().
    getHostName()) itself to
         cloudera5.qfab.org.
         Host cloudera4.qfab.org expected to have canonical name
    cloudera4.qfab.org but resolved
         (InetAddress.getLocalHost().getCanonicalHostName()) itself to
    cloudera5.qfab.org.

    I don't understand this error. Sometimes I get it sometimes I don't. Also,
    the host keeps changing again and again. I mean when i click on the hosts
    tab, if I see cloudera 5 and i refresh or go to some other page, I will see
    some other host. I don't understand whats going on over here.

    Any idea what may be the reason for this?

    Error2: 1 hosts are reporting with MIXED CDH version
    This error I get every time. I think this is the root cause of everything.
    If I fix this, I wont get a server error. That is what I feel.

    Those messages are exactly that they said. It probably means that you have
    a typo in your /etc/hosts file, if you're using that instead of DNS. Or you
    have a really messed up DNS.

    The "mixed CDH version" thing is unrelated. That won't cause your hosts to
    have bad hostname/IP resolution. Log on to cloudera4 and fix its networking
    first.

    Can you log onto cloudera4 and run this:
    $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print

    Does that show the expected fqdn and ip addr?

    Its perfect. I tried on all nodes.

    [ashwin@cloudera4 ~]$ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn();
    print socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"
    cloudera4.qfab.org
    10.100.104.19

    Can you log onto cloudera4 and run this:
    $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"

    Does that show the expected fqdn and ip addr?

    I know mixed CDH version is an unrelated error. But when I try to build a
    cluster or add new service this is what I get.
    Host localhost.localdomain may not join service 'mapreduce1': Host
    software version incompatible with service version or something similar.

    Thanks

    Those messages are exactly that they said. It probably means that you
    have a typo in your /etc/hosts file, if you're using that instead of DNS.
    Or you have a really messed up DNS.

    The "mixed CDH version" thing is unrelated. That won't cause your hosts
    to have bad hostname/IP resolution. Log on to cloudera4 and fix its
    networking first.

    Any idea what may be the reason for this?

    This error I get every time. I think this is the root cause of

    Lily is not a cloudera component, you do not need to worry about
    that throwing a mixed version warning
    To contradict what Todd said, Lily HBase Indexer is shipped and
    supported by Cloudera. The version reporting is harmless, and addressed in
    a later Search release.

    You can fix the initscript warning, from an earlier post, by either:

    - Uninstalling the hbase-solr-indexer package. That's just the
    initscripts, which CM does not use.
    - Or you can run `chkconfig --level 2345 hbase-solr-indexer off'.

    bc

    You should be more concearned about the transparent hugepage defrag
    warning, have you addressed that yet?

    Sorry it took me a while to respond.

    Going back to "sometimes I get it sometimes I don't". I have several
    hypothesis:
    - Do you have "dns" before "files" in /etc/nsswitch.conf? (The "hosts"
    line.) If so, how is your DNS set up?
    - Are those VMs? Did you somehow clone them in a way that duplicate the MAC
    address?

    Cheers,
