FAQ
Hey guys

I am trying to install Impala using cloudera manager.
Now everything got install, but at last step it is showing that "Failed to
receive heartbeat from agent".

In my /etc/hosts/ file

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain
192.68.5.25 Karam

and In the logs
*BEGIN sudo tail -n 50 /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent//cloudera-scm-agent.out
sed 's/^/>>/' *
*END (0) *
*BEGIN sudo tail -n 50 /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent//cloudera-scm-agent.log
sed 's/^/>>/' *
tail: cannot open `/var/log/cloudera-scm-agent//
cloudera-scm-agent.log' for reading: No such file or directory
tail: cannot open `/var/log/cloudera-scm-agent//cloudera-scm-agent.log' for
reading: No such file or directory
*END (0) *
end of agent logs.
scm agent started
Installation script completed successfully.
all done
closing logging file descriptor

and the error is

Installation failed. Failed to receive heartbeat from agent.

    - Ensure that the host's hostname is configured properly.
    - Ensure that port 7182 is accessible on the Cloudera Manager server
    (check firewall rules).
    - Ensure that ports 9000 and 9001 are free on the host being added.
    - Check agent logs in /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent/ on the host being
    added (some of the logs can be found in the installation details).

I don't get that even the log file is not getting created.

I read some posts which says to do FQDN, now my problem is i am connected
to wifi network, i know it's silly but i don't knw what to put in fqdn(
like what is my domain)

I am pretty new at this . please help me out guys.

    If you do `service cloudera-scm-agent restart', what do you see on the
    console and in the /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent log directory?

    If you want to try out CM and CDH, the best way is to start a cluster on
    EC2. It'll work much better than your laptop. Plus you can run real jobs.
    It may cost you $5, which is very much worth it. See:
    http://blog.cloudera.com/blog/2013/03/how-to-create-a-cdh-cluster-on-amazon-ec2-via-cloudera-manager/
    http://www.cloudera.com/content/cloudera-content/cloudera-docs/CM4Ent/latest/Cloudera-Manager-Installation-Guide/cmig_install_on_EC2.html

    Cheers,

    The problem is: AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'type'

    Let's debug it a bit. After the host installation has failed, do not
    rollback in the wizard. We can take a look at the system state.

    What distro are you running?
    $ cat /etc/lsb-release
    $ python -V

    Are you running the same version of agent and server? Try:
    $ dpkg -l | grep cloudera

    Hi Karam,

    Seems to be a hostname setup issue. The server log is rejecting the agent's
    heartbeat due to:
         java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Hostid is invalid (must be like a
    hostname): 01hw179614

    You probably need that host to report fqdn. That is, this should show an
    fqdn, and not just "01hw179614".
    $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn()"

    Hadoop works poorly without a full DNS setup.

    Btw, an easy way to try out CDH + CM is via the cloud wizard:

    Let's debug it a bit. After the host installation has failed, do not
    rollback in the wizard. We can take a look at the system state.

    What distro are you running?
    $ cat /etc/lsb-release
    $ python -V

    Are you running the same version of agent and server? Try:
    $ dpkg -l | grep cloudera

    Hi bc,

    I know how to set up fqdn in ubuntu but my doubt is when we have to set
    fqdn we have to write* hostname.domain* in /etc/hosts file..
    But i don't know what is my network domain and don't knw hw to find it.

    Although i did try this link
    http://www.mydnstools.info/
    which gives me the info about my machine, It shows me something like this
    Connection Address: 122.160.50.137 (my public IP) (
    ABTS-North-Static-137.50.160.122.airtelbroadband.in) . So I tried
    airtelbroadband.in as my domain

    So now my etc/hosts file is

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.5.31 01hw179614.airtelbroadband.in 01hw179614
    then i checked *python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"*
    It gives me my IP 192.168.5.31
    and I checked *python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn()*
    *
    *
    it gives me 01hw179614.airtelbroadband.in"

    But after all this i tried again by starting from adding new host, But it
    again showing same error.

    Thanks
    Karam

    The problem is: AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute
    'type'

    Let's debug it a bit. After the host installation has failed, do not
    rollback in the wizard. We can take a look at the system state.

    What distro are you running?
    $ cat /etc/lsb-release
    $ python -V

    Are you running the same version of agent and server? Try:
    $ dpkg -l | grep cloudera
    $ debsums -a

    Cheers,
    bc

    It doesn't matter what domain name you set. Your hosts is not doing lookup
    via DNS. Instead, they're using /etc/hosts. So you just need to be
    self-consistent.

    After you made the change, did you re-do the installation from the
    beginning? Could you attach the latest CM server log file?

    Hi bc,

    I know how to set up fqdn in ubuntu but my doubt is when we have to set
    fqdn we have to write* hostname.domain* in /etc/hosts file..
    But i don't know what is my network domain and don't knw hw to find it.

    Although i did try this link
    http://www.mydnstools.info/
    which gives me the info about my machine, It shows me something like this
    Connection Address: 122.160.50.137 (my public IP) (
    ABTS-North-Static-137.50.160.122.airtelbroadband.in) . So I tried
    airtelbroadband.in as my domain

    So now my etc/hosts file is

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.5.31 01hw179614.airtelbroadband.in 01hw179614
    then i checked *python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"*
    It gives me my IP 192.168.5.31
    and I checked *python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn()*
    *
    *
    it gives me 01hw179614.airtelbroadband.in"

    But after all this i tried again by starting from adding new host, But it
    again showing same error.

    Thanks
    Karam

    I know. You need to set up your domain name. If you need help with that,
    there are lots of linux networking guides out there. E.g.
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/158957/how-to-set-the-fully-qualified-domain-name-in-12-04

    When you're done, please make sure that this works:
    $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print
    socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"

    Hi Karam,

    Seems to be a hostname setup issue. The server log is rejecting the
    agent's heartbeat due to:
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Hostid is invalid (must be like
    a hostname): 01hw179614

    You probably need that host to report fqdn. That is, this should show
    an fqdn, and not just "01hw179614".
    $ python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn()"

    Hadoop works poorly without a full DNS setup.

    Btw, an easy way to try out CDH + CM is via the cloud wizard:
