FAQ
Hi All,

My python script will access hbase using thrift.

I want to install this outside hadoop/hbase cluster.

Can you guys let me the steps to install the thift client for python please?

Thanks

    Hi Mike -

If you plan to use Python with HBase than I would recommend using a project
    called happybase (https://github.com/wbolster/happybase), which is
essentially a wrapper around Thrift which allows you to communicate with
HBase more "pythonically". He has great documentation and it's very simple
and straight forward to get working (basically use pip / easy_install for
    installation).

Of course, you need to have the Thrift server running on the cluster,
    installation is detailed here (
    https://ccp.cloudera.com/display/CDHDOC/HBase+Installation#HBaseInstallation-InstallingtheHBaseThriftServer
    ).

Thanks Ricky. I have already tried it.

But I want to use raw thirft client for python. Do you have the steps to
install thrift client for python please?

    Thanks

    Hi Mike -

You say you "tried it", did you have issues using it? Because if you're
having issues getting happybase installed than you're going to have a bad
time using the raw thrift implementation. In any case, if you google *"Python
HBase Thrift"*, the first result is the official Apache Wiki page which
details generating the Thrift code for python.

    http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/Hbase/ThriftApi
    also a tutorial at:
    http://yannramin.com/2008/07/19/using-facebook-thrift-with-python-and-hbase/

By the way, if you install Happybase, it *comes* with the Thrift API..which
means you can just not use Happybase and instead use the raw Thrift API. Is
there a reason you need to use the raw thrift API?
