FAQ
Can you provide more detail about your install? Cloudera packages, parcels
or did you build your own? Did you use Cloudera Manager to do the install?
Does a basic "select * from hbase_table limit 1" work?
Do any queries against hbase tables work in hive?

    Hi Greg:

    Thanks for looking into this. Answers to your questions:

    1. We installed impala though CM by using parcels. The current version is
    Impala-1.1-1.p0.8.

    2. Yes, I used CM to install, "All Services" -> "Actions" -> "Add a
    Service" -> Then choose Impala for the initial installation then updated
    through "Parcels" interface.

    3. Basic "select * from table_name limit 1;" works in both command line and
    Hue Impala UI.

    4. The same query (the query that had issue in impala) worked in Hive.

    Please let me know if you need more information.

    Based on that it seems specific to that table, and the filter used.
    Could you run these two queries and attached the log for those executions
    as well as the DDL used to create the table?

    select name from product limit 10;
    select name from product where manufacturername = 'Cat Store' limit 1;

    By chance does it work with a filter that does not contain an apostrophe?

    It does not seem to matter with or without apostrophe.

    The following gives the same error:
    select name from product where manufacturername = "Cats Pride" and
    manufacturername IS NOT NULL limit 2

    By chance does it work with a filter that does not contain an apostrophe?

    Thanks for looking into this. Answers to your questions:

    1. We installed impala though CM by using parcels. The current
    version is Impala-1.1-1.p0.8.

    2. Yes, I used CM to install, "All Services" -> "Actions" -> "Add a
    Service" -> Then choose Impala for the initial installation then updated
    through "Parcels" interface.

    3. Basic "select * from table_name limit 1;" works in both command
    line and Hue Impala UI.

    4. The same query (the query that had issue in impala) worked in Hive.

    Please let me know if you need more information.

    Great news Tony, I'm happy you were able to unblock yourself.

    I think Impala should have failed with a better error message than
    "NoClassDefFoundError".
    When you have an opportunity, could you file a JIRA so we can improve the
    error handling on the Impala side (http://issues.cloudera.org)?

    Thanks,
    Lenni

    Just want to let you know that I have fixed the issue. I got the hunch
    based on your analysis that it is somewhat related to hbase (and the DN
    node rtldn6 is the only DN who has that issue). So I looked at the hbase
    log file on that specific node and found the following message:
    =========================
    WARN org.apache.hadoop.ipc.HBaseServer: Unable to read call parameters for
    client 10.6.70.3
    =========================
    10.6.70.3 is the Hbase master, not sure why region server #6 couldn't talk
    to the master, but a reboot of the "region server" on rtldn6 fixed the
    issue.

    Thank you very much for your time.
