I'm up to date and have no problems.

it turned out to be legacy usb support in my bios. i had enabled that
recently to get grub to talk to the usb keyboard, but with that enabled
the kernel gets confused when trying to initialize the usb. i'll have to
investigate usb support for grub or usb boot options to undo whatever the
bios legacy support is doing. any pointers would be great.
