The Gilt Groupe is an e-commerce organization that is in hyper-growth
mode. We are huge supporters of the open source community and some of
our top officers are heavily involved with the Postgres community. We
stay on the cutting edge of technology and are in need of a PostgreSQL

Postgresql Database Administrator - NYC

Company Overview

Gilt Groupe provides access, by invitation only, to Men's, Women's and
Children's coveted fashion and luxury brands at prices up to 70% off
retail. Each sale lasts 36 hours and features hand selected styles from
a single designer. The business model, based on urgency and scarcity,
offers extraordinary goods at incredible prices, but only for a limited
time. All of these sales occur daily at noon, driven by daily email
reminders and alerts to a private membership. Most of the hot items are
sold within the first 10 minutes, with the bulk of sales occurring
within the first 90 minutes. The mania that ensues is similar to what
we've seen at Black Friday rush at Walmart, the purchase of a new iPhone
at an Apple Store, or the mad dash at sample sales like Filene's
Basement and Kleinfeld's wedding gowns in New York City.

The business causes a daily, massive flood of transactional traffic at
noon. Hundreds of thousands of shoppers compete online for the limited
inventory, creating the need for a highly scalable and reliable web
infrastructure. Our peak traffic is approaching the average load of
large ecommerce sites like Amazon.com. The technology team must build
an infrastructure that can scale to this capacity near noon, sustain the
tremendous load for a few hours, and then go away. Gilt Groupe requires
the techniques of cloud computing and virtualization.

Gilt Groupe's primary data systems run on Postgresql (version 8.3).
Today's system is growing rapidly and requires very high levels of
availability. The future data strategy for Gilt Groupe continues to
leverage the latest in open source RDBMS technologies while expanding
into alternative storage solutions (distributed key value stores).

Gilt Groupe is deeply committed to the open source Postgresql community.
Team members have spoken at Postgresql conferences and Gilt Groupe is
one of the sponsors of the hot standby project under consideration for
version 8.5.
