Use of ODBC was a primary reason for case-insensitivity if I remember
correctly or least that started the discussion. ODBC passed function
names thru as all CAPITALS and since all of postgres functions, mainly
the aggregates, are lowercase, they were causing errors. Rather than
have both in the database catalogs, it was decided to lowercase all
names.
It is not the function names being shifted to lowercase that is causing the
real problem. What will happen when you
try to create a table like this:
CREATE TABLE PROD_INFO(Name text, name text, NAME text);
Postgres should complain about duplicate column names...what else?!?
