variables which are set but never used.

Can these vars be deleted; and if so, is it ok to delete them directly
in the bleed version?
Attached is a patch to eliminate those variables as well as bump $VERSION
to 0.9916 (soon to hit CPAN). Sorry for the noise.

In 744c1e29 I removed vutil.c from the list of customized files, since it's
now synchronized with upstream again.
