Im looking for functions that draw 3d graphics. Is it possible in R?
Well, at first it's not neccessary to ask almost the same question two
times, particularly if it is not very specific in both cases.

There are several options, here is what comes to my mind:

    - persp() "This function draws perspective plots of surfaces over the
    x?y plane."

    - image(): "Creates a grid of colored or gray-scale rectangles with
colors corresponding to the values in z. This can be used to display
three-dimensional or spatial data aka ``images''."

    - several functions() in package rgl (only for windows, available at
    http://www.stats.uwo.ca/faculty/murdoch/software).

    - scatterplot3d() in package scatterplot3d (available at CRAN) for
    plotting 3D point clouds.

As you can see, it is hard to help if your question is not very specific
(what kind of 3D graphics as we can imagine several different kinds,
your OS, version of R, etc).
There were many questions regarding 3D graphics in the last two years on
R-help. Searching the archives could have been successful.

    Hi R users and developers:

Recently Dr Ligges answer the following to a 3d plot question:
    - several functions() in package rgl (only for windows, available at
    http://www.stats.uwo.ca/faculty/murdoch/software).
I have download the package rgl on my windows 2000 (Service Pack 2) on a
    R 1.4.1. platform
with the rgui --sdi option, but I obtain the following window error
messages when I use the command "example(hist3d)"

    privileged instruction

After several windows of this messages it appears the following message:

OpenGL error OGLGroup initlist: 1283:desbordamiento de pila

    And the program crashes

    What am I missing?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Kenneth

I don't have access to Win2K to test on, but I don't see that error on
Win95, Win98, or NT4. So it could be a Win2K incompatibility, or it
could be a problem with your installation.

The current version (from "library(help=rgl)") is 0.5.6. (The
Help|About window incorrectly reports itself as 0.5.5).

Can you get any functions at all to work, i.e. is this just a problem
    with hist3d?

It works for me on Win2k and on XP, and looks very like a problem with the
OpenGL driver on a specific machine.

Hi again, R users and developers:

How can I convert an image to a numerical matrix in R?
The image must be in a particular format? BMP, JPG, GIF?
The original image are not too big 800 x 600 pixels and 16 colors.

Finaly I want the 800x600 integer matrix of the image to handle in R.

Thank you very much, again, for your help!

library(pixmap) reads pnm, all of the above can be converted to pnm. My
guess would be that you need an indexed pixmap.

I also downloaded the rgl package (after reading recent Uwe Ligges' post)
and installed in on my Win2k Pro sp2 machine. It seems to work with no
problems. I ran most of the examples, including the hist3d one, and all of
    them worked fine.

A couple of thoughts. I have administrative priviliges on my machine.
Could this possible make a difference. The rgl library uses OpenGL. Is it
a standard install on all Win2k systems?

    Cheers,

    Andy

PS I am running standard 1.4.1 version of R installed from precompiled
    binaries.

    The problem is found!

It was a problem with the OpenGL configuration.
I open the driver OpenGL configuration window and I uncheck the
    perfomance and quality options.
It seams that some options are incompatible with the Rage 128 card driver.

But right now I am running all the examples with out any problem!!!

    Any way....

Yes, ATI has historically provided pretty poor OpenGL support.
    Sometimes it helps to go to their web site and download a new driver;
sometimes that just makes things worse.

Indeed yes, it looks like a problem with your graphic card/driver. I also
installed rgl on w2k without problems, except on a computer that displayed
the same kind of error message. The driver for the S3 Savage/MX graphic card
was the origin of the problem that was solved by upgrading this driver to
the latest version. Do you have other programs that use OpenGl? In my case,
the error appeared also in Mathcad 2000 in 3D graphs and in Simply 3D 3,
    whith OpenGl features enabled...

By the way, I would like to say that I really like rgl,... although there is
no possibility to save the graph in a vector format like postscript or
wmf/emf. Is it a limitation of OpenGl libraries?

    Best,

    Philippe Grosjean

OpenGL is a raster-oriented renderer. RGL does maintain a
vector-oriented list of things to draw, but OpenGL does all the
    hidden-object removal by maintaining a "z-buffer", i.e. an indicator
of the depth of each pixel in the scene. It would be quite difficult
to reproduce that properly in Postscript or wmf/emf. You could come
close by drawing things from the back to the front, but errors would
be made, e.g. when drawing intersecting polygons.

You may try ''scatterplot3d'' library, or just use persp function in the base
    library. Best, isaia.
