All,
I've edited the release some, and I think pending quotes the main body of the release just about to go.
One thing we could really use, though, is some solid statistics about how 8.3 improves performance.
I'm working on the extended release now, which is the part which goes on the website. I've added a separate features page because there are so many of them:
http://developer.postgresql.org/index.php/83ReleaseFeatures
This is based on the main 8.3 Features page. However, I think we need a separate version of the page for the press, because:
a) it needs to be worded differently for marketing reasons, and b) the list for the press should be shorter than the "geek" version.
If anyone can help me fix up that page to make it shorter and better worded, then please help. We need to have the English text together within the next 4-5 days, so it can be translated.

All,
Based on the complaints of numerous community members, I (and the other two moderators) am now moderating this list. I will be filtering out all messages which have anything to do with the name change.
We will create a separate list for discussion of project nomenclature, so that the folks who want to debate that can, without causing other members of the community to get frustrated and unsubscibe from the list (which is currently happening).
It really frustrates me to have to do this (I hate moderating, and I'm about to have to do it from the road), but we can't afford for this list to be disfunctional when we're trying to get out a release.
The new list for arguing about a name change is: [email protected: change_the...@postgresql.org.] It should be available from the list subscription interface soon, otherwise just go to:
http://mail.postgresql.org/mj/mj_wwwusr?domain=postgresql.org&func=lists-long-full&extra=change_the_name
Or send "subscribe change_the_name" to [email protected: lis...@postgresql.org]

I think there's nothing wrong with doing it in the FAQ. It's consistent with what the FAQ already says, and in any case it's what people have been doing informally for years. As I've suggested before (and as others have), I think doing it in formal documentation and such like without a longer-term plan for communications is a bad idea. But I will cheerfully shut up about it no matter what is decided, especially since I'm not doing any of the work.

I object to this declaration of consensus. I think there was an agreement that the FAQ entry we had, or perhaps something slightly stronger, was ok. "Promotion" is quite another matter, and I don't believe there was any such agreement. I recall arguing rather strongly that such an undertaking needs a _clear plan_ and that it should not be in any case undertaken for 8.3, because the suggestion came too late in the release cycle to put the necessary planning into the matter.
What is the giant panic on this matter, anyway?

You probably remember the discussion about promoting the use of the alias "Postgres" in addition to the official name "PostgreSQL". I have changed the FAQ so that in paragraphs with multiple references to "PostgreSQL" we also use the alias "Postgres".
I have talked about a similar change to our documentation and perhaps the web site, but I am _not_ ready to discuss those.
What I want to ask about is an idea a few people have mentioned. They don't like that we change usage in the same paragraph. The suggestion is to mention that "Postgres" is an alias to "PostgreSQL" at the top of the document and just use "Postgres" in the remainder of the document.
This seems like a lot more use of the alias than I though we wanted as a group, but because several of the people suggesting this also didn't want the alias at all, I figure I should ask and we can discuss it.
So, for the FAQ, which currently uses the second-entry-per-paragraph logic, should it be changed to the logic suggested above where every mention but the first is "Postgres"? (This will of course affect the documentation changes when we are ready to discuss those.)
