Hello everybody.
Rather than asking for a technical detail or writing about a problem, I'm asking for up-to-date case studies involving PostgreSQL.
The company where I'm actually working is migrating some apps; one requires a Data Warehouse, and I'm proposing PostgreSQL, but they're thinking of Oracle, as the system has one table (among others) with 20 fields and more then 19 millions of records, and this exists for 2 subcompanies, which are actually in different databases, but the migration project implies joining the two subcompanies data.
This amount of data is the result of 8 years of usage, and the data growing rate has increased in the last two years.
They asked me for case studies that shows this, so they can go ahead with the migration to PostgreSQL.
The ones shown in "http://www.postgresql.org/about/casestudies/" are out-dated and don't show amount of records or database/table size or growth.
I hope you could help me with this.

Hello all,
if you don't know yet: our request for a devroom together with the BSD guys was accepted this week. Thanks to Daniel Seuffert for submitting the request. We also got a table for a stand, which we should fill with some flyers, info material, a bit merchandising stuff and some people behind the table for answering all the questions.
We have to submit a program for the talks, we have so far: (i took the first/best fitting talk from everyone)
Simon Riggs: - "PostgreSQL High Availability"
Josh Berkus: - "A Few of My Favorite 8.3 Features"
Gabriele Bartolini: - "ht://Miner and PostgreSQL"
David Fetter: - "Postgres: A Babel of PLs"
Oleg Bartunov: - Full text search
Guido Barosio: - Comparing MySQL and PostgreSQL (is this still up to date?)
Stefan Kaltenbrunner: - A talk about the PostgreSQL Infrastructure
Magnus Hagander: - Something about the MSVC port ;-)
Susanne Ebrecht: - Encoding issues
Bruce Momjian: - ???
Federico Campoli: - ???
We have around 9 slots to fill, a bit more, if we have some 15 min talks. Update me please, if you want to give another talk.
What else:
- social event: the usual FOSDEM social event is overcrowd. We plan to search a bar for our own event on friday evening.
- flyers: we need some (thousands).
- booth: who can help answering questions on saturday and/or sunday?
- merchandising stuff: i will bring along some elephants and mugs. I thought about 20-30 elephants plus one or two 60 cm elephants i might have until next year ;-) I also should have mugs, some stickers and i have some shirts from Italy. What else do we need and/or can bring to Brussels?
- live CDs: based on experience from 2007, if we want to give away live CDs, we should come up with let's say 1500-2000 CDs.
- Invitations for european PostgreSQL users and companies using PostgreSQL??
- And last but not least: election of EU board!
Kind regards

Hello,
I have been looking into getting some woman-sized PostgreSQL shirts, in addition to the more typical men-sized tshirts. The particular style is American Apparel shirts, style # 2102. They are "normal looking" t-shirts, just proportioned a bit more correctly for a woman's body. The shirt says 'PostgreSQL' in small print on the front, and has the big elephant logo on the back. We'll most likely ask for a $20 donation to the PostgreSQL non-profit for each shirt.
So, I'm conducting a small poll:
If you are interested in a woman-sized shirt, please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY with a quantity, and size (XS, S, M, L, XL). If you would not wear a PostgreSQL woman-sized shirt yourself, please consider whether you would maybe get one as a gift for someone else this holiday season :)
I would be overjoyed to have my mailbox clogged with requests, so please don't be shy!
Your email will not be considered an official order request - I'm just trying to get a feel for the numbers. Also, feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested.
Thanks!

I would have some questions to ask. For example, the purpose of the organization is to prepare "events, conferences, courses"... so this is mainly advocacy stuff ? or do you also plan to contribute on translations, coding, etc. ? On the translation side, I know that Giuseppe Sacco is doing a really great work (100% done for 1.8). But I don't see any translation of pginstaller (PostgreSQL Windows Installer), and the PostgreSQL translation is at most at 60%. Do you think your organization can work on some of these ? this is also kind of advocacy work :) And what about the manual ? Last question, do you know italian people coding on a PostgreSQL project ?
Whooo, that's really a lot of questions, sorry about that :) with your answers, I'll probably write a small paper for postgresqlfr.org. Thanks :)

Ciao,
I am really proud to announce that last Saturday, 17 november 2007, the Italian PostgreSQL Users Group has been founded by twelve volunteers and that today the non-profit organisation has been officially registered.
As far as I know, this is the second non-profit organisation entirely dedicated to PostgreSQL ever to be founded in Europe - after the great French one (I might be wrong though, in that case please correct me).
As the statute of the association says, the main aim of IT-PUG is the social promotion of the PostgreSQL RDBMS in Italy, through the organisation of projects, events, conferences, courses and initiative oriented towards:
* community (users and developers) * business companies * public organisations * schools and universities
The non profit organisation is based on principles such as freedom, democracy and volunteering, and the participation is open to every Italian citizen or resident (the association is everyone's). The statute has been collaboratively written by all the founders of the association.
This process has taken a few months and has been the natural produce of PGDay. Most of the founders indeed took part in the organisation of the biggest gathering of the PostgreSQL community ever to be held in Europe (so far). ;-)
Although IT-PUG is still in its startup phase, users can find some information (including the statute - in Italian) on the website: www.itpug.org . Hopefully soon IT-PUG will be ready to accept subscriptions online as well.

Interested in helping out with a UK User Group or UK advocacy for PostgreSQL? Then please contact me at [email protected: u...@postgresql.org]
After much discussion about User Groups over last 18 months, its time to get even more active in the UK. Initially, we'd like to recruit a few people to assist with the organising of local PostgreSQL events throughout the UK.
There are a number of commercial companies wanting to sponsor events, but not enough people to actually organise and advocate open source PostgreSQL.
We're holding a planning meeting at 8pm on Monday 3rd December. The initial venue is planned to be near Oxford railway station, though we may consider moving it to a more convenient location for all of the volunteers. The meeting might also become a virtual one, if that's the best way.
So far we have Dave Page and myself as volunteers... we know many other people in the UK have been involved in the past and are active in the community, but I don't want to assume that they are interested in helping with organisation and advocacy.
If you'd been thinking about getting involved, now is your chance.

Later on, would you consider doing this again for men and women sized polo shirts?
I've already purchased one a while back from a business that must have gone out of business because they are no longer selling these shirts. I liked the XL shirt that I bought in every way except I that I think that the manufactures in Mexico must have different standards on shirt sizes than the US. It seems sized like a medium to large and it fits me like a glove. But there is a plus side to its sizing, I never need to iron out the wrinkles to give it that nice pressed look. :o)

It's that time, after a wildly successful conference last October in
Portland, Oregon we are now beginning to ramp up for the East Coast 08
conference! The current plan is to host a two day conference of
Tutorials (new) and Talks on March 28th and 29th. The currently
designated location for the conference is the Univserity of Maryland.
This will be confirmed within two weeks.
For now, we are making a call out to the community, it was the hands of
the community that made the October conference great. It will be the
hands of the community that makes the March conference great!
We have already had a couple of offers for help which we are grateful
for but we want to make sure that we open this up for anyone who may
want to help organize the conference. Of specific interest are
community members that are geographically close to the Maryland area.
We will need boots on the ground to help us follow up with others (such
as student unions etc..) to make sure we kick this conference off
without a hitch.
As a reminder all proceeds from the Conference series go directly to
PostgreSQL via Software in the Public Interest, a 501(c)3 non-profit,
and will be used for PostgreSQL development, support and advocacy.
So if you are on the east coast and can help with organizing this
conference please let me know.
Sincerely,
